  • Help the forum

    Hello.

Following on from a previous thread. We are looking at ways we could draw people to the forum and any ideas you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The forum was always a long term plan and was to grow as members invited friends etc. The forum needs a bit of help.

So far we have done the following:
    • Facebook - This produced alot of members but not posters. We have also found certain "groups" and "Facebookers" mark our links as spam, deny or remove our posts from walls etc and scupper our efforts. The nature of Facebook also means that only people who interact with you see your posts. This makes it hard to hit a wide audience without paying for adds.
    • Twitter - This is successful but autoposting was deactivated because the link to Facebook was creating to much spam. I will turn this link off ASAP and start autoposting topics to Twitter so please make use of the #hashtag box when posting.
    • Leaflets
      • Shop windows - This is costly and doesn't produce the footfall.
      • Takeaways etc - Mixed success, the time varies on how long the advert is shown and footfall is low.

Although I know certain users have had a go with some of our other features and we thank you for it, these are still very neglected. Do you or someone you know make use of the following?

    • Groups - These are operational again and can be used for clubs, societies etc and can be public or private. The reason the groups are request only is to limit the plethora of groups that can appear, Facebook is a prime example how multiple groups cause issues. I feel that our groups also provide a better environment than Facebook for discussion; plus the ability to post multiple links, photos, maps to a thread is a bonus and they don't get lost down a wall.
    • Articles - In the future I hope this is our landing page. It can be used for news, events or to promote threads or blogs. This will only come into its own when the forum is busy.
    • www.thehullcalendar.co.uk - Our own calendar and events page. Entries here show on the front page.

Please offer any suggestions on where we could advertise etc or how would you bring over new members? How can we make this forum what it should be. A good, friendly, free local resource for everyone.

Any help or suggestions are welcome. Lets make this forum something special!

I only found the forum a couple of days ago completely by accident. I clicked on a comment replying to an article in the HDM and landed on here and thought it looked good so decided to join.

i shall get my thinking cap on sir!

one idea i did have for when people get here- just to help
them feel a bit less lost and enablw us to welcome people
better was to extract the 'introduce yourself" topic from the hull chat aection,
and create a seperate section at the top of the forum page
(above hull chat) specifically for that purpose?

just at the mo, the welcome section isnt as 'obvious'- and i think
it would be better used if it was the first section people saw at the top
      when they arrive

and if people get a proper welcome- rather than feeling they have to
post something first to be aknowledged- they may stick around and
      contribute more readily
      I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it...

Some of the other forums that I use, I ended up there, because that is where Google had taken me, when searching for information. If I got drawn into conversations, and they were lively/interesting places, I have stayed to chat and contribute.

Whilst some information can only be assembled by contributors with specialist knowledge: how about trying to build up a collection of photo and text around some specific focus(es) such as how particular districts were in the past?

We've already got a germ of a theme around St Stephen's. What about Hessle Road, Sculcoates, ship building in Beverley etc.
